How to Clean an Electric Pressure Cooker

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Soft cloths
  • Sponge
  • Warm soapy water
  • Dishwasher (optional)

Cleaning an electric pressure cooker is only tricky for one reason: it cannot be submerged in water. Things can go terribly wrong with the electrical components and the read-out screens when large amounts of water seep. With an appliance which deals in extreme temperatures and high pressure, having the gauges legible and working is of high importance. Thankfully, the appliance has a user-friendly design which allows for cleaning without using a sink full of water.

Step 1 - Clean the Outer Body

Unplug the pressure cooker and remove the inner cook pot. The outer body of the pressure cooker is what cannot have exposure to large amounts of water. Do not fill the outer body with water, nor submerge it in water. The entire outer body should be wiped down with a cloth which has been soaked and been rung out. For troubled spots, try allowing a small amount of white vinegar to sit on the spot for 5 minutes before wiping and rinsing clean.

Step 2 - Clean the Inner Cook Pot

The inner cook pot can be run through the dishwasher or cleaned in the sink by hand. Do not use abrasive scouring pads or chemicals to clean it, however. The chemical coating on the interior of the cook pot is crucial since it allows the pot to withstand the extremely high temperatures. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge should be used if washing by hand. Dry the interior cook pot thoroughly before returning to the outer body.

Step 3 - Cleaning the Lid

Rinse the lid with warm water and wipe it down with a soft cloth. Be sure to pay attention to around the sealing ring, pressure limit valve, air escape, anti-block cover, and float valve. These are all the essential components which are located on the lid. Many go through to the underside as well and should be rinsed completely. The pressure limit valve can be removed and rinsed clean if necessary. Be sure to replace it accurately since it vents excess pressure.

Step 4 - The Sealing Ring

Pull up the sealing ring by holding the knob on the sealing ring supporting cover and pulling up. Once removed, clean not only the sealing ring but also the sealing ring supporting cover. There is a rubber grommet located in the center of the sealing ring supporting cover which should also be cleaned. When replacing the sealing ring, be sure the knob faces outward. While cleaning it is a good idea to check the sealing ring for cracks, dings, or chips and replace it if necessary.

Step 5 - Drying

All parts should be thoroughly dried with a soft cloth before replacing. Trapped water can damage the metal of the outer body and lid as well as begin to erode the rubber of the sealing ring or grommets. Thoroughly drying the outer body will ensure the electrical panels do not get damaged and drying the inner cook pot can maintain the internal element of the electric pressure cooker.
