Step 1 - Wire Brush

Step 2 - Grill Stone
Another option that you have for cleaning the grill grate is to use a grill stone. This is traditionally a pumice stone that you can use to rub against the grill grate. This is great at breaking down the hard build up that gets on your grill.
Step 3 - Tin Foil
Perhaps the easiest way to clean your grill grate is to utilize tin foil. Start out by wrapping the grill grate completely with tin foil when the grill is still cool.
