How to Clean Boat Trailer Wheel Bearings

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Jack
  • Lug wrench
  • Rubber mallet
  • Dowel rod
  • Screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Clean rags
  • Degreaser
  • Wire brush
  • Wheel bearing grease

When a boat trailer wheel seems unstable, it may be time to clean the bearings. This article will show you how.

Step 1 – Remove the Boat Trailer Wheel

The boat trailer wheel needs to be removed to access the bearings. Pry off the hubcap and then remove the lug nuts holding the boat trailer wheel in place. Pull the wheel off.

Step 2 – Remove the Bearings

Place the boat trailer wheel face up, and straighten the pin in the center of the hub with pliers. Then, pull it out. Use the socket wrench to remove the spindle nut. Pull out the outer wheel bearing and thrust washer. Insert the dowel through the hub until it stops, and then strike it with the mallet, to remove the ball bearings.

Step 3 – Clean the Boat Trailer Wheel Bearings

Wipe off excess grease with the rags. Spray the degreaser on the wheel bearings, wait several minutes, and then scrub them with a wire brush. Buff the wheel bearings with a clean rag. Put several drops of the grease in the palm of your hand and roll the bearings in it, to lubricate it. Reassemble the boat trailer wheel.
