How to Clean Cat Pee on the Couch

by DoItYourself Staff

You should clean cat pee on the couch as soon as possible to minimize smells and stains. Cats sometimes pee in the house to mark their territory, or when they're feeling stressed. Males mark their territory more than females, and neutered animals are less likely to do this.

Steps to Clean Cat Pee on the Couch

  1. Blot stain with paper towels to absorb the fluid.
  2. Sponge area with cold water.
  3. Blot again with paper towels.
  4. Mix 1 tablespoon of white spirit/grape vinegar with 2 cups tepid water.
  5. Dab this solution to help with stain removal.
  6. Apply a specialized fabric cleaner and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Cat Pee Removal Tips

These tips will make this task easier:

  • Cat urine is ammonia based, which means you should never use an ammonia based fabric cleaner or stain removal agent. Ammonia based products will entice your cat to pee on the same area again.
  • Wear rubber gloves to avoid contact with bacteria.
  • The vinegar solution could stain delicate couch upholstery. First test the solution on a hidden spot to check if it’s safe to use.
