Copper pots and pans look great when they are clean. However, copper does have a natural reaction to oxidation and it may not look good to see. To protect itself from corrosion, it forms a green patina as a result of the chemical reaction involving oxygen. Copper pots and pans are great additions to the kitchen because these types of cookware conduct heat a lot better than other metals, thus making them energy efficient. They offer a decorative value to the kitchen as well due to natural color. When copper cookware become stained or dirty, a heavy abrasive may not be necessary because common materials found in the kitchen offer a good alternative. Here is how to clean copper pots and pans inexpensively.
Step 1 – Choose Readily Available Materials
The method required to clean the copper pots and pans will depend on the materials readily available in the kitchen. For sure, salt is one of them. However, the availability of lemon, vinegar, baking soda, cream of tartar and ketchup may not be certain. Choose any available material in the kitchen and follow the steps below.
Step 2 – Use Lemon and Salt
Lemon contains a weak acid called citric acid that can be used to remove copper stains. Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle the sliced portion with salt. Use this to scrub the copper cookware until a clean surface is revealed. It is best to work in only one direction when scrubbing – either clockwise or counterclockwise. Wash the copperware with soap and water and dry it using a clean cloth.
Step 3 – Apply Special Paste
A special cleaning paste can be made out of different materials. This can be done by mixing lemon juice with baking soda or cream of tartar. If lemon is not available, use vinegar instead and mix it with baking powder. Make sure not to place too much lemon juice or vinegar into the mixture. Mix only a sufficient amount enough to create a paste. Rub the paste onto the copper surfaces using a sponge, a scrub pad, a cloth or a rag until a clear surface is revealed. Wash the copperware with water to remove the paste. Wipe with a clean cloth to dry.
Step 4 – Use Ketchup
If ketchup is available, it can be used as an alternative. Place adequate amounts of ketchup on a rag or cloth and use it to rub the copperware until a cleaner copper surface is exposed. Afterwards, wash the cloth with water and detergent to remove the ketchup. Wipe the copperware dry with a clean dry cloth.
Tips: Never scrub on the surfaces of the copper pots and pans too hard because it may scratch them. Apply a gentle pressure just enough to allow the cleaner to work its wonders on the metal. In addition, make use only of a soft cloth or sponge when cleaning.
