How to Clean Natural Slate Flooring

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Rubber gloves
  • Detergent
  • Vinegar
  • Bucket of water
  • Mop
  • Broom

Natural slate flooring has an elegant appearance and is suitable for kitchens or other rooms in your home. The slate tiles have a textured surface, and may be available in several colors. The tiles are resistant to heat, moisture and less prone to staining. Cleaning the natural slate flooring is uncomplicated.

Step 1 – Broom the Surface

Sweep the flooring to get rid of dust and other debris. This makes the washing of floors easier. If dirt remains on the floor when you mop it, this will mix with the water and you’ll have a difficult time washing the floor.

Step 2 – Prepare the Cleaning Solution

The slate tiles can be cleaned with a mild detergent or vinegar. Mix 100 ml of detergent in 10 liters of water. If you are using vinegar, pour only 10 ml in 10 liters of water. Avoid using harsh chemicals such as bleach, which could stain the floor.

Step 3 – Mop the Surface

Dip the mop into the cleaning solution and cover all surfaces. Rinse the mop and then, using a clean bucket of water, go over the tiles to remove traces of detergent.
