How to Clean Slate Fireplace Surrounds
what you'll need
- Foaming bathroom cleaner
- Scrub brush
- Drop cloth
- Bucket
- Sponge or rags
Your slate fireplace surround can easily become blackened by soot and smoke from burning the fireplace. It is very easy to clean it, and have it looking fresh and new.
Step 1: Prepare the Area
This isn't a difficult job, but it can be a messy one. Remove all decorative items around your fireplace and sweep the area. If you have a fireplace screen or doors, remove them or cover them. Put the drop cloth or plastic on the floor around the area you will be cleaning to catch water and drips.
Step 2: Cleaning the Slate
Use your brush to lightly brush the dirty area to remove any dirt or soot that is loose. Then shake the can of bathroom cleaner and spray it in a thick coat onto the slate. Allow it to foam well and sit on the slate for a while. You will most likely see the dirt being lifted away. Use the sponge dipped in water or the rags to wipe all the cleaner away. Rinse with clean water. If the area is still dirty, apply again and use the scrub brush on stubborn areas. Allow to dry.
