How to Connect Your Laptop to a WiFi Connection

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Wireless card
  • Installation CD

By following the below mentioned steps you will be able to connect your laptop to a WiFi connection quickly and easily.

Step 1 – Finding an Internet Source

You should have given your network a name when you configured it. You need to find the WiFi connection and connect to it. The network may be password protected. This is the password you entered in the configuration stage.

Step 2 – Using a Wireless Card

You must have a wireless card for your WiFi connection to work. Most laptops already have a wireless card installed. You will be able to find this out by contacting the manufacturer. If you do not have one in your system you need to purchase one. You can purchase an external card which is easy to attach as it simply plugs into a port on your computer.

Step 3 – Installing the Drivers

You should have received a CD with your wireless router. Insert the CD into your CD drive. It should start up automatically. Follow the onscreen instructions to install all of the required drivers. The instruction guide that came with your router will also help you with this and inform you of the drivers that are required.

Step 4 – Connecting to Your Wireless Network

Once you have installed the drivers, click on the wireless network icon. A list of available networks will be displayed. Select your network and enter the password if it is required. This should connect you to the internet.
