How to Cover a Popcorn Ceiling

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Tiles or coverings
  • Adhesive
  • Paint

Covering a popcorn ceiling may seem like a big deal. It doesn't have to be if you are willing to look at the things that you can do. It can be made wiser if you are willing to take the afternoon and just do it.

Step 1: Prep the Ceiling

The ceiling will need to be prepped before the ceiling can be covered. This can be a simple process of cleaning the ceiling of any dirt or other debris that may be there. Warm water and vinegar can be used for the cleaning part of the process. Let the ceiling dry so that the moisture will not interfere with the installation later on. The ceiling may also be painted. The paint on the popcorn ceiling may be chipping and ready to come off. If some does, don't worry to much, the ceiling will be covered anyway.

 Step 2: Apply the Adhesive

The next thing that will need to be done is to apply the adhesive to the tiles. This will help them to stick to the ceiling and not fall back down. Some systems will require you to snap the tiles together. This may be an easier option if you have others that can help you with your installation. The tiles can be applied without any adhesive damaging the rest of the home. This is also something that you may want to think about when you are looking at the options available to you.

 Step 3: Apply the Tiles

Once the adhesive has been installed in the area that the tiles will be places, the tiles can be placed on the ceiling. Again, they may snap together for easy installation. This is something that you will have to find out when you start looking for tiles in the first place. There are also systems that look like wood and can make your ceiling look like it was made from wood and that there was no popcorn ceiling there in the first place.

 Step 4: Clean the Ceiling

After everything has been installed, the ceiling should be cleaned again to keep any adhesive from falling or leaking out from behind the tiles. Warm water can be used to clean it again. Also clean any area of the room that may have had adhesive fall on it. This will keep the room clean and help keep anything else from sticking to the floor.

This is just one of the ways that you can cover a popcorn ceiling. Take the time to really look at the options that you have. This way you will find the best way to cover your ceilings and you will enjoy the new one that you get. If you are not happy with the style that you have picked, you can change it, but it will take time and money that you may not have. This is why it is so important to get it right the first time and keep it right for years to come.
