How to Crimp a Coax F Connector

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • F Coaxial Crimping Tool
  • Wire Cutters
  • Adjustable Pliers

Coax F connector is utilized for the operation and carrying of signals needed for cable television or satellite television. It was invented in the 1950s by a man named Eric E. Winston. This device became popular in the operation of antennas used for VHF television systems. This type of connector is affordable because it makes use of a center wire which serves as a solid conductor. The coax F connector can be used for cable, satellite, as well as terrestrial television systems. below are the materials that you need along with the instructions on how to crimp a coax F connector.

Step 1-Strip the Cable

Use your wire cutters and cut the end of the cable. Strip the cable until you see the copper wire inside of it. Using the wire cutters, carefully cut ½ inch into the end of the cable until the cable is completely stripped off and you are left with nothing but the copper wire that was inside.

Step 2-Pull Back Wire Mesh

You will now need to strip the exterior vinyl cable by ¼ an inch. When you see the wire mesh, pull the whole part down on the cable jacket. Use your forefinger as well as your thumb to pinch the foil sleeve that gets exposed. Place this around the interior insulator.

Twist the exposed foil sleeve so that it is securely pressed onto the insulation part. If you are equipped with a quad shield cable, you will notice that there are two layers present for the wire mesh, as well as two sleeves of foil. Pull back the wire mesh and the foil sleeves but leave just one foil sleeve untouched. Twist this foil sleeve on the insulation.

Step 3-Install Coax F Connector

Get your coax F connector. You can purchase the coax F connector at your local home improvement store. Do not hesitate to ask the help of professional or technician present when you purchase this device so that you will be sure to purchase the right kind of connector for this type of installation.

Place the core wire of the coax F connector inside the crimp sleeve. Do this such that the interior insulation is right up against the flange part which is located at the bottom part of your connector boot. Using your adjustable pliers, grab the coax F connector from one side and push the connector in its right place.

Step 4-Crimp the Coax F Connector

Notice that the lower sleeve is located on the vinyl cable jacket. Take the sleeve and place this inside the clamps with the hexagonal shape. The crimping tool for a coax F connector should be equipped with these hexagonal clamps. Take the handles of the crimping tool of your coax F connector and squeeze it tightly. You should hear a pop. This means that you have securely crimped the coax F connector.
