How to Cut a Rain Gutter Downspout

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Miter Saw
  • Tape Measure
  • Carpenter's Square
  • Marker

The rain gutter downspout is the portion of the gutter that carries the rain water down the side of the house and into the ground or some sort of basin. It is usually installed along the corner of a home so that it will blend in better. When installing the vinyl rain gutter downspout you will need to make some cuts so it will fit properly. Here are some steps to cut the rain gutter downspout.

Step 1: Measure for Length

You can use a tape measure to find the dimension you need for the length of the downspout. However, an easier way is to simply stand the downspout up in the area and mark it in the location where the cut needs to be made. Sometimes this is more accurate than measuring.

Step 2: Use Square to Make Straight Line

Before you cut the downspout you will want to have a line on all four sides of the vinyl gutter. Use the square to transfer the line all the way around the gutter.

Step 4: Cut With Miter Saw

Place the rain gutter downspout on the miter saw table and line up the marker line with the saw blade. Turn on the saw and carefully run it through the vinyl.
