How to Cut Copper Sheeting for Gutters

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Measuring tape
  • Marker
  • Razor or utility knife
  • Metal cutting sheer
  • Tool for deburring
  • Ladder
  • Rag

When installing your own gutters, it is important to cut the copper sheeting correctly. If you plan on making this your next home project, here are a few steps that you can follow to guide you.

Step 1 - Measure and Prepare

Begin by measuring the height of your home to determine the dimensions of the gutter. Once you have the height, you can assume 8 to 10 inches for the gutter width, unless you prefer otherwise. Lay out the copper sheets and mark the dimensions. Use a straight edge and take your time to make sure that the marks are even.

Step 2 - Cut Metal Sheeting

Be sure to put on work gloves and safety goggles before you begin cutting. Line up the metal cutting sheer and slowly cut from one end to the other. If at all possible, try to go through an entire cut in one motion so you do not have to deal with uneven edges.

Step 3 - Deburr and Clean

Once you have finished cutting, you can use the deburring tool on all of the edges. This will help to smooth them out. Use a rag to dust off the sheets.
