How To Decorate Ceiling Tiles

by DoItYourself Staff

When you remodel a room, don't forget about the ceiling tiles. Replacing the old ceiling tile might not fit in your remodel budget, however, so if your ceiling tiles are in good condition clean them up and see what you have to work with. Paying some attention to your ceiling will make a simple room remodel even better. Show off your talents and taste on your ceiling. Show off your space from top to bottom. Depending on how you choose to decorate your ceiling tile, you may need to take them down and work on each tile individually.

Top Decorating Methods for Ceiling Tiles

Your ceiling tiles can be the crowning glory of any room. Whatever your taste, personalize every inch of your room.

  • Paint is the simplest way to decorate your ceiling tiles. You can use gloss or latex paint. There are even paints that look like metal. Try some faux finishes that can be used on walls. You can also stencil to add a very custom look. Plain white ceilings are just boring. Jazz it up a bit.
  • Wallpaper is not just for walls! Pick out some wallpaper that fits with your room décor. Take each tile individually and wallpaper it. Since you are doing each tile, feel free to choose a few different complimentary styles of wallpaper.
  • Fabric is also a great way to decorate your ceiling tiles. Choose light weight fabric that will compliment your room. If your desire is to have the ceiling tiles look like they were installed that way, simply remove the ceiling tiles. Stretch the fabric over each tile and glue in place. Use thumb tacks on the underside to hold in place while the glue dries. Another way is to staple the fabric to the ceiling tiles.

You can give your ceiling a dramatic look by draping the fabric. Use the same methods as above; just don't pull the fabric tight. Let it drape down for a dramatic look and feel. Use decorative push pins on the right side for a little more flair and staying power.

  • Using molding, buttons or easy to attach trinkets to plain old ceiling tiles will really jazz it up. Choose colors or styles that match the theme of the room. There are a lot of fun styles in your local craft shop. Use molding to make each tile look like a picture frame. This is also a great idea for kids’ rooms. You can place original art work in the “frames”. You really are limited only to the scope of your imagination when it comes to decorating ceiling tiles.

If You Don't Like It-Change It

Once you have your ceiling tiles decorated and you get bored with it or change the décor of the room, change your ceiling tiles. Decorating your ceiling tiles can add interest to your space. Whether you use paint, fabric or other design techniques, make your ceiling shines and is the center of attention in your room.
