How to Defend Your Home Against Swarming Termites

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Pest or Termite Spray
  • Termite Poison

Swarming Termites can fill you with dread. Even though they won't do any damage to you or your property when they are swarming they can still be an overwhelming pest. Swarming termites are in their reproductive stage and are emerging to find a mate. They will always fly towards the light and have no desire to be in your home. They can end up in your home though. There are some precautions you can take to defend your home against the termites.

Step 1 - Spraying Window Edges

Spray around the edges of window frames and any other possible openings with a fly or pest spray. You will find that hairspray, window cleaner, air freshener or other aerosols will work equally as well. The foreign substance will repel the swarming termites leading them to withdraw from the sprayed area.

Step 2 - Dealing Directly With the Colony

If you discover a termite colony near to your home, you should look to deal with it as soon as possible. There are several poisons on the market that are available from most hardware stores. These are usually diluted and then poured directly into the nest. You should know, however, that any liquid poison will seep into the soil and therefore it is possible it could enter your water system. Always make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions. It is always preferable to contact a professional when dealing with a termite nest.
