How to Dismantle a Microwave Oven

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Screwdriver (Philips head)
  • Adjustable Wrench

Knowing how to dismantle a microwave oven will save you a lot of money on repairs. The microwave oven may seem like a complicated piece of machinery, but a look under the hood reveals otherwise. You should be able to fix most anything that has gone wrong with the microwave oven yourself.

Step 1: Unplug the Machine

Before attempting any kind of microwave repair, you need to sever the power connection to prevent electrical shock. There still may be some components which have electricity regardless of this, so approach with caution.

Step 2: Remove the Outer Case

In order to be able to do any microwave repairs, you need to be able to access the internal parts of the machine. This means unscrewing the screws which hold the shell in place. These are generally found on the bottoms of the sides of the machine and may be attached to the backing as well. Every machine is different, so there is no way to give you specific instructions on how to go about removing the shell.

Step 3: Remove Inner Parts

Inside the microwave will usually have a glass plate or rotating dish in the bottom which needs to be removed. You may even want to remove the snap-in top which protects the mode stirrer from getting dirty. You can check this for any problems which may be causing it to stick. When you remove parts, this will help you to understand the orientation of the microwave's working parts.

Step 4: Find the Transformer

If you are having problems with the power to the machine, this is probably due to the transformer. Take caution as this may sometimes have electricity remaining inside. The transformer will be located close to where the plug enters the machine. It will be attached to the frame with screws. Once the screws are removed, you should be able to simply remove the part.

Step 5: Remove the Magnetron Tube

The magnetron is the most important part of the microwave. Without it, all you have is a box which circulates air. The magnetron is located at the top of the machine and will be connected to the mode stirrer by a wave guide. You can access the magnetron by removing the wave guide. This is generally attached to the frame with screws. Once you have the wave guide removed, the magnetron is simply removed by either removing screws, or by unsnapping it from a case depending on your model. You should be able to buy a new magnetron easily if you are not able to cook food.

Step 6: Diagnose the Problem

With everything removed, it should be fairly easy to see exactly what the problem is. Any parts which are scorched have suffered from an electrical overload. These need to be replaced in order for your microwave to be able to function properly.
