by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Ratchet Set
  • Needles Nose Pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Large Drop Cloth

If you have a washing machine that needs to be repaired, knowing how to disassemble it is important. The instructions provided are generic ones for disassembling a washing machine. The instructions should apply to most types of washing machines that are sold. If there are any additional disassembly instructions required consult the owner's manual or schematic design for your washing machine.

This article provides you with information about the tools, materials and steps required to take your washing machine apart in order for you to make any necessary repairs.

Step 1: Unplug the Washing Machine

Before you begin the disassembly of your washing machine, unplug it in order to keep from inadvertently electrocuting yourself while working on your repair. Place the cord somewhere that it will not be damaged while you work on it. Lay a large drop cloth on the ground to act as a collection station for the pieces that you remove from the washing machine including any screws or clips that you take apart.

Step 2: Remove the Rear Panel

Turn the washing machine around and remove the clips that are holding the washing machine's back panel in place using a screwdriver. The a flathead screwdriver can be inserted in the slot where the clips are and by pressing upward the clips should become dislodged in order for you to remove the panel.

Step 3: Remove the Top of the Washing Machine

More than likely the type of repair that you have may involve the drive belt that moves the wash tub or the washing machine motor. In either case the wash tub will need to be removed in order for you to gain access to the motor and other parts below. Take the screwdriver and pop loose the clips holding the top of the washing machine in place. There will be about 4 clips found in each corner of the washing machine.

As soon as you remove the top, place it along with the rear panel to the side. The electrical cord will be attached to the control panel for the washing machine, which is part of the top.

Step 4: Remove the Washtub

The washtub consists of an agitator, which is what moves the water inside the washing machine. The agitator will come loose by pulling it upward. Remove any screws or bolts underneath the agitator using a screwdriver or ratchet. There may be a few additional bolts that holds the wash tub in place. These should also be removed. Lift the wash tub up and place it on the drop cloth along with the other pieces to the washing machine that you have disassembled. You should now have remaining the shell to the washing machine and access to the motor and other parts underneath.

You can now perform whatever troubleshooting needed to repair your washing machine. Once you have fixed, reassemble the washing machine in the same manner you disassembled it.
