How to do a Humidity Test at Home

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Drinking glass
  • Ice cubes

If you think that you have humidity problems in your home, there is a very simple humidity test that you can do to find out. Low humidity levels can cause you have to sore throats, dry skin, and getting a "shock" every time you touch something that is metal or synthetic. Low humidity levels also increase the possibility of getting a cold or some sort of respiratory problem. Here is a simple humidity test to find out if you need to add humidity to your home air, or dehumidify.

Step 1: Place Ice Cubes in Glass

Set out a regular drinking glass on a counter and place four ice cubes in it.

Step 2: Give it 3 Minutes

Place the glass in any room where you feel that the humidity is low or high. Do not place the glass in their the kitchen or the bathroom. Give it three minutes before you check on it again. If you continue to walk through the room you will mess up the readings.

Step 3: Check Ice Cubes

After the 3-minutes is up, check on the ice cubes in the glass. If there is water droplets on the outside of the glass, then the humidity is at a good level. If there are no drops, then you need to set a humidifier in the room.
