How to Do Touch up Car Painting
what you'll need
- Paint in appropriate vehicle color
- A small amount of clearcoat
- Masking tape
- P1500 grade wet-and-dry paper
- Polishing compound and lint-free cloth
Small imperfections and blemishes can be easily rectified without the expense associated with professional forms of car painting. A few simple pieces of equipment can be used to achieve a respectable finish.
Stone Chips
Hoods can be damaged by small chips caused by stones thrown through the air by other vehicles. To rectify them, peel off two inches of masking tape and roll the ends into a fine point. Dip one end of the tape into the paint and gently dab the color into the small chips making sure that it meets existing paintwork. Once the color has dried, repeat the process using a small blob of clearcoat to protect the paint itself.
Scratches
Remove as much of the scratch as possible by rubbing gently with a wet piece of P1500 paper. Bring the flatted area back to a shine by rubbing vigorously with polishing compound on lint-free cloth. Once a shine has been achieved, use a rolled piece of masking tape to dab paint into the exposed area of the remaining scratch. Remember to add clearcoat to the scratch once the paint is dry for added protection.
