How to Drill into Backsplash Material

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Masking tape
  • Drill
  • Tile bit

A backsplash can be a very basic tile configuration, but can also be as intricate as multicolored mosaic tile. The backsplash is often found in the kitchen or in the bathroom as it prevents water from hitting the structural wall. Ceramic tiles are the choice of homeowners for backsplash and when you need to drill through tile it can become costly. The following article will show you how to properly drill through the backsplash material to avoid breaking and cracking.

Step 1 - Mark it

It is important to know where you plan to drill. Over the area that is to be drilled; place 2 pieces of masking tape so that they form an "X". Where the tape connects is where you will be drilling. The tape helps to dampen vibrations which cause the tile to break.

Step 2 - Prep the Drill

Use a drill bit that is the used specifically for tile and insert it in the drill.

Step 3 - Drill

You can now drill the backsplash. Make sure the drill bit is placed in the center of the "X" and level with the backsplash. Pull the trigger and apply steady pressure until you reach the proper depth.
