How to Fix a Broken HDMI Receiver
what you'll need
- Replacement HDMI Receiver
- Circuit Board
- Soldering Iron
- Solder
- Desoldering Braids
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
A HDMI receiver is needed to receive high definition multimedia interface signals. The receiver box is similar to a cable or satellite receiver box, and is a highly specialized piece of electronics equipment. If your high definition multimedia interface receiver is not working properly or is broken the logical approach to fixing it is to take it to a repair shop. If the nature of the repair is something that you believe that you can fix, you can attempt to make repairs yourself.
Be aware that many cable companies that supply the high definition multimedia interface receiver may have prohibitions against you attempting any repair of their unit. Any attempt to make a repair may result in you invalidating your contract with the cable company, resulting in you having to pay for the replacement of the receiver unit. If you own the unit then you will not have any concerns regarding the warranty or invalidating any contracts with the cable or satellite company. Please note that when working with an electrical unit such as a high definition multimedia interface receiver make sure that it is turned off completely and unplugged. This will prevent any potential electrocution hazard.
Step 1: Determine the Problem with the HDMI Receiver
Before you begin the repair of your broken high definition multimedia interface receiver you need to troubleshoot the unit to determine what the problem is that needs to be fixed. The common problems that may occur with your high definition multimedia interface receiver includes:
- poor signal quality
- unit does not turn on/off properly
- signal resets frequently during a program
- signal goes black or dark during a program
Each of these problems are indicative of a problem with the main circuit board within the high definition multimedia interface receiver. They can be addressed by removing the main board and replacing it with a new circuit board.
Step 2: Open the HDMI Unit
With a set a pliers or screwdriver depending on the model of high definition multimedia interface receiver that you have, open up the back of the receiver. This will expose to you the circuit board. Use the pliers (preferably a needle nose pliers) to carefully remove the circuit board from the receiver. If necessary, take a soldering iron and desoldering braids to remove the solder that is holding the circuit board in place.
Step 3: Replace Circuit Board
Place a new circuit board inside the high definition multimedia interface receiver. Use the soldering iron to carefully solder the replacement circuit board in place. Once the circuit board has been placed properly insider the high definition multimedia interface receiver close the unit up.
Step 4: Test the HDMI Receiver
Plug the high definition multimedia interface receiver in and hook up the necessary cables and wires. With all of the connections made, turn the receiver on. The problems identified in Step 1 should be eliminated.
