How to Fix a Mini DVD Player Motor
what you'll need
- Screwdriver
- White lithium grease
- Clean cloth (lint-free)
- Denatured alcohol
- Multimeter
- Lens cleaner fluid
- Camera lens tissue
A mini DVD player may need to be repaired if the tray does not open or if the DVD disc does not spin. Mini DVD players are simple devices with only a few mechanical parts. You can do some simple repairs but if there is a circuit board problem it may be less expensive to replace the mini DVD player.
Step 1 – Clean the DVD
This simple step may fix the problem. Hold the DVD with your thumb in the center and a finger on the edge. Use compressed air to clean away dust. If you see fingerprints on the disc then wipe it with a cloth dampened with denatured alcohol.
Step 2 – Remove the Screws
Remove the mounting screws to the disc tray. Press the open button and when it opens you can pull it out and unplug it. If the tray has a clip on it, then slide the panel sideways.
Step 3 – Unplug the Cables
You will see cables that link the front panel to the inner workings. Unplug those cables. Now take out any screws in the front panel and take it off. It may be held in by clips or screws that are harder to see.
Step 4 – Take the Tray Out
Take off the hold-down on the tray and take the tray out. Take a cotton swab and dampen it with denatured alcohol and run it over the travel rail and the guides. Use white lithium grease to lubricate them.
Step 5 – Remove the Drive Belt
Take off the drive belt with tweezers. Inspect it for any damage. Take a clean cloth and dampen it with denatured alcohol. Use the cloth to clean the belt. If there is damage to the belt then remove the belt and replace it.
Step 6 – Objective Lens Cleaning
Take the housing off of the player. Pull up on the clamp that is over the lens. Clean the lens first with a can of air or a soft-bristle brush. If it still needs cleaning then take some lens fluid and dampen a lens tissue and carefully wipe the lens.
Step 7 – Test the Current
Using a voltmeter test the player to see if it has an electrical current. If there is no reading there may be a problem with the circuit board. It is usually less expensive to buy a new player than to replace circuit boards.
Step 8 – Clean the Motor
Unplug the plug that goes to the motor. Clean it with a spray of electrical contact cleaner. Then hook it up again.
Step 9 – Pull out the Motor
Unscrew the screws holding the motor in or push in on the bales to release the motor. If the motor is defective then replace it at this point.
These steps should help to solve many of the operating problems that you might encounter with your player. Refer to your owner’s manual for the specifics of your mini DVD player. Replacement parts can be purchased from online parts retailers.
