How to Fix Refrigerator Leaks

by DoItYourself Staff

Many people can get quite intimidated by the idea that they have to fix a refrigerator. That is why, whenever they see their fridge leaking, they assume it is due to some big problem beyond their common knowledge and skills. Most often, however, quite the opposite is the case. In this simple guide, you will learn how to repair your leaky refrigerator all by yourself, rather than rush for expensive professional help or even consider buying a new one.

Identify the Source of Leakage

The very first thing to do in case of a fridge malfunction is to identify where the leaks come from. In this way you will know what fridge part is causing the problem. For example, if water comes from the back of the refrigerator, this is probably due to an ice maker issue, while leaks from the side of the appliance are usually the result of a faulty door or gasket. One more source of leaks is the drain pan at the bottom of the fridge.

Inspect and Fix the Gasket

If the leak comes from the fridge door, it is either the result of a clogged door gasket or of the door not closing properly. If the gasket is dirty or caked with food, take a warm, soapy sponge, and clean it thoroughly with careful but firm movements. However, if the gasket is torn, you have to replace it with a new one. You will do best if you can purchase a gasket specially made for your fridge type. Alternatively, you can get a universal all-size-fitting gasket, which, however, may take longer to install.

Fix the Fridge Door

If the problem is caused by the fridge door, you can fix it in one of two ways. First, take a screwdriver and tighten the screws and bolts of the door. If this does not make the door close fully, you can try setting the fridge at an angle since refrigerators with self-closing doors need the help of gravity to close properly. For most fridge types, you will be able to tilt the fridge by adjusting its front legs. Simply remove the fridge grill and twist or use a screwdriver to fix the height of the legs. If your fridge does not have adjustable legs, buy some wooden shims and place them under the legs or the unit to set it at an angle.

Examine and Repair the Water Tube

In case your fridge is equipped with an ice maker, you may notice leaks coming from the back of your fridge. This may be caused by a problem with the water tube that connects the ice maker with the source of water or by malfunction of the fittings that connect the tube to the ice maker. If the tube is leaky, replace it with a new one. If the fittings are loose and leaking, shut off the water that comes through the tube and tighten the fittings with a pair of pliers.

Inspect the Drain Pan

A third source of leaks may be the drain pan. It is used to collect condensation from your fridge and is located at the bottom of the unit, behind the grill. You should have no problem taking the pan out: simply remove the grill and gently pull the drain pan out. Be careful, though, for the pan may be filled with water and you may spill it all over the kitchen floor.

After you have taken the pan out, inspect and test it by pouring some water in it. If there is a leak, replace the pan. If it holds water, clean it and put it back in place.
