Crayon stains are some of the most difficult to get out of clothing. If you have kids, then you undoubtedly know just how difficult these can be to get out. Although they may be difficult, they are not impossible to remove. Here are the basics of how to get crayon stains out of clothing.
Step 1--Prepare the Clothing
Before you can properly remove the stain, you need to get the clothing ready for treatment. You also need to remember not to put the clothing straight into the washing machine and wash it as normal. If you do this without first treating the stain, you are not going to get anywhere. Lay the piece of clothing out on a counter or another flat surface so that you can begin treating it.
Step 2--Saturate the Stain
Once you have the clothing spread out, you need to put some stain remover on the stain. There are many different commercial stain treatments that you could choose to use. Some of them come in a spray, some of them come in a gel, and others in a liquid. Regardless of which type of stain remover that you use, you need to make sure that you completely cover the stain. This area should be completely wet with stain remover at this point. Once you have covered the area with stain remover, you need to let it soak in. You might want to read the directions on the side of the stain remover, but you should plan on leaving it alone for 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 3--Apply to the Inside
At this point, you will want to turn the clothing inside out so that you can see the inside of it. You should be able to see where the stain is located from the inside. You will then want to apply the stain remover to this area. Make sure that it is completely soaked with the stain remover.
Step 4--Dishwashing Liquid
You will now want to take the dishwashing liquid and apply it to the stain. Just like you did with the stain remover, you want to apply it to both sides of the fabric. Make sure that the entire area is covered with dishwashing liquid before you move forward.
Step 5--Wash With Detergent
After you have applied the dishwashing liquid to the clothing, you will then need to wash it in hot water. When you wash it in the hot water, you are going to want to use laundry detergent also.
Step 6--Bleach
At this point, you should utilize bleach to treat the clothing. If you are dealing with a white piece of clothing, you can use regular bleach, but you want to use color safe bleach for colored clothing.
Step 7--Dry
Once you have washed the clothing thoroughly, you are going to want to allow it to dry. You should most likely try to let it air dry instead of using a clothes dryer.
Step 8--Repeat
In most cases, this process will remove the majority of the crayon stains. However, if the stains are still there, you will want to repeat the process again until they are gone.
