How to Get Rid of Fleas with Banana Peels
what you'll need
- Bananas
Fleas can invade your home whether you have a pet or not. The worst part is, once fleas have taken hold, you are led to believe the only way to get rid of them is to fill your house full of harmful chemicals. You can actually get rid of fleas by using banana peels. This is best done when you first notice there is a problem outside before they move inside.
Step 1 – Lots of Bananas
You will need to use several pounds of bananas to get the required amount of banana peels needed. Don't worry about all of the extra bananas you're going to have left over. There are many different recipes you can use in order to get rid of the bananas without inundating your family with pounds of bananas all at once.
Note: one good suggestion is to dip the bananas in chocolate and keep them in the freezer for a cold snack on a hot summer day. Bananas can also be kept in zip lock bags in the fridge or freezer for later use. This part is completely up to you.
Step 2 – Spread the Peels around
You need to distribute the banana peels throughout the back yard. Depending on how bad the flea infestation is will depend on how wide of an area to spread the banana peels. Generally 1 peel per 5 to 10 square feet will suffice. You can use more peels later if you do not get rid of the problem entirely, but you are better off using more banana peels than less. Put the banana peels on a plate in several different locations throughout the house as well. If you go this route, be very mindful of fruit flies. The second you see one, you will need to remove all banana peels. As long as you keep the home sealed, you should be fine.
Step 3 – Natural Remedy to Kill Fleas
When the fleas eat the banana peel, they will die. Fleas are attracted to the smell of the peels, but their system cannot handle the enzymes which are present in the banana peel. The longer the banana peel sits, the more effective they are in killing off fleas. Once the peels have turned completely black and shriveled up, you can decide if you need more banana peels or not. Inspect your grass in order to determine if there are any fleas. Since the only hard part about the process is finding something to do with the bananas, there is no harm in treating several times.
