How to Get Rid of Lice Eggs

by DoItYourself Staff

In case of an outbreak at home or in your child's school, know how to effectively get rid of lice and lice eggs that may be in your hair or on your body.

Head Lice

Head lice are best removed by using a specialized shampoo. There are over-the counter shampoos available, but if more than one person in your family is infected with the lice, you may want to contact your physician about prescribing a stronger product for you to use.

After washing and rinsing out the shampoo, dry your hair with a towel. Rub coconut oil into every strand of your hair, from the roots to the tips. When your hair is saturated in the oil, wear a shower cap for a few hours. This will suffocate the head lice and loosen the eggs on your hair. Use a lice comb to make sure that you comb all the eggs out of your hair. You may have to do this 2 or 3 times before all the lice and eggs are removed.

You can rinse your hair with vinegar and rewash your hair to get all the coconut oil out of your hair.

Body Lice

Rub coconut oil or mayonnaise all over your body twice a day until the lice has gone. In the same way that the shampoo helped suffocate the lice and eggs in your hair, lice will not be able to live on your body after coming in contact with the coconut oil or specialized shampoo.

Lice can easily spread from one person to another, and it is important to make sure that you check others in your household for lice after catching it with one person.
