How to Get Rid of Washing Machine Odor

Having fresh clothes from a smelly washing machine will not make you feel any cleaner and proper washing machine maintenance is important to prevent washing machine odor. There could be many reasons for washing machine odors and it is necessary to determine the source of the smell. Follow these steps to get rid of the odor.

Step 1 – Wipe the Surface of the Washing Machine

Clean the surface of the washing machine with a wet cloth. Clean up any detergent spills immediately as it may smell fresh but could have lead to washing machine odor. Also, clear the interior of the machine with warm water and soap. You may also scrub the interiors if required.

It is also recommended that not to treat any clothes with chemicals near the machine or spray anything on the top of the machine. Apart from causing the machine surface to rust or stain, it may damage the surface of the washing machine which could be one possible reason for odor.

Step 2 - Use Screwdriver to Remove Deposits

Minerals present in the hard water cause ugly deposits on water fixtures that look like rust or stains. Due to continued use of the machine water deposits build up around faucets and drains and over time it causes washing machine odor.

Use a vinegar-soaked paper towel to clean the faucet. Pour half a cup of white vinegar in the sink to dissolve the alkaline deposits.

Step 3: Clean and Let it Dry

Once all is clean and dry, bleach the interior of the machine with the help of a sponge. Let the bleach dry before you start using the washing machine again.

Step 3 - Turn off Hot and Cold Water Faucets between Wash Days

This will prevent water pressure strain on hoses that lead to and from the tub and save money in the long term. Pressure build up could cause blocked pipes and leaks that will lead to eventual damage as it causes constant pressure on the faucets.

Check the Interior and Exterior Regularly

Look for clothes or items that may have become stuck in the washer and check drain lines and hoses to make sure they are clear. Frequently check the pipes attached at the back of the machine to remove dust, insects and water. Pooled water has a distinctive smell and can cause other problems.

Prevent Mold

Rinse laundry with cold water after the wash cycle as hot water is a breeding place for bacteria and mold that thrive in warm temperatures. Inhibiting the growth of mold will lead to less cleaning which equals better maintenance of the machine. Prevention is better than a cure for moldy clothes. Leave the washing machine door open after use as it will prevent the growth of bacteria, allow the heat escape and prevent washing machine odor.

Regular checks of the interior and exterior of the washing machine and proper cleaning habits should prevent washing machine odor. Once you have tried all these steps and the stench persists, either change your detergent, check the water outlet drains or call a plumber. Washing machine odor is an easy problem to rectify once you have identified the cause of the problem.
