How To Get Spray Foam Insulation Out Of Clothing

by DoItYourself Staff

Spray foam insulation is commonly used for insulating home interiors. It is a great substitute for the conventional fiber glass insulation because it is easier to apply. Spray foam insulation is considered to be one of the best insulating materials to control against moisture and air. It also helps save energy, strengthening homes and even protects families from airborne pollutants that are harmful..

Forms of Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation comes in different forms like spray guns which can fill in the gaps and crevices. When liquid chemical has been sprayed into the gaps, the material will begin to expand and will then seal the portion of the gap, making it an efficient insulation. The chemicals used in foam insulation are polymers and foaming agent that expand in foam style. They can expand to about 100 times their original size and will dry out when polymer bubbles. The use of spray foam insulation offers several advantages, like:

  • Helps in saving energy cost
  • Aids in adding strength to structures of buildings and homes
  • Prevents air and moisture in infiltrating building or homes
  • Aids in making buildings and homes comfortable
  • Decreases the need for maintaining  HVAC equipment

Removing Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam comes in latex and polyurethane varieties. Most of the time, latex can be removed from clothing by using soap and water. However, polyurethane is more difficult to be removed since it is the type of spray foam that expands. Here are various practical tips in removing spray foam from clothing:

Using a Pumice Stone

Use pumice stone and remove the spray foam insulation from the clothes by scrubbing it off. However, be careful when doing this because this may lead to a hole in your clothes.

Using Nail Polish Remover

Use nail polish remover that has an active acetone ingredient, apply it to the soiled area, then scrub it off. This is only effective when the spray foam insulation has not dried up yet. So it is advisable to apply acetone as fast as you can.

Using Dry Cloth

Use dry cloth and wipe off the spray foam insulation from the clothing. Again, this is only advisable to use if the spray foam insulation is still moistly or has not been cured yet. Avoid using soap and water if the spray foam insulation has not cured yet. Soap and water will only make the spray foam insulation to dry up faster.

Using a Combination of a Pumice Stone and Warm Water

If you have accidentally applied spray foam insulation on your skin, wiping it with a dry cloth may remove it. Moreover, using pumice stone and warm water with soap can also remove spray foam insulation from your skin. Additionally, using a polish remover with acetone and applying it on the skin is also an option.

Using Petroleum Jelly

Applying petroleum jelly on the affected area may also remove spray foam insulation from the skin. Apply petroleum jelly on the skin, use a plastic glove to cover the area, then after one hour wash it with soap and water.
