The process of tree pruning is very simple compared to how it may sound. Care must be taken not to damage the tree. The key is to protect the stem or trunk wood of the tree while tree pruning.
• First you should make a small wedge shaped cut on the underside of the branch that you want to prune. This should be done on the branch side of the stem collar. This will help break the bark at that point and stop a tear from getting to the stem tissue.
• Next a little further up the branch cut all the way through the branch. You should start at the top and end at the bottom leaving a stub for the end.
• Finally the third cut should be made parallel to the stem collar. Also it should be made on the branch side of the stem collar. This is to help reduce the length of the stub as much as possible.
Reasons for Tree Pruning
Tree pruning is usually done for three reasons.
• Safety – To remove dead branches that can fall and injure property or people.
• Health – To remove diseased wood and promote the tree’s health.
• Aesthetics – To enhance the natural form and character of the tree.
