by DoItYourself Staff

  • 2 1/2 -inch screws

Hanging a corner medicine cabinet is a great idea to add a storage facility without having space restrictions. Moreover, corner cabinets are not only practical, but also aesthetically pleasing since they fill up empty corners. Luckily, they are very easy to hang and only require a few materials and tools.

Step 1 - Getting Ready

The first thing you need to do is to measure the height of your corner medicine cabinet and of its bottom sides. Note down these measurements on a piece of paper because they are important. Once you have taken down these measurements you can decide the height at which the cabinet will be placed on the wall. Keep in mind the actual height of the cabinet so as not to place it too high on the wall. Use the carpenter’s level to take note of the lowest edges of the cabinet on the wall. You will work better if you make level markings of the cabinet’s bottom measurements on the corner walls.

Step 2 – Locating and Using the Studs

You will be using the studs in your wall for the actual hanging of the cabinet. Therefore, the next thing to do is to locate the studs in the chosen corner with a stud finder. If you do not have a stud finder you can use a hammer: you should lightly tap the wall with the hammer to locate the studs. However, using a stud finder is quicker and easier, plus stud finders come at a very cheap price. Once you have located the studs you can start installing the 2 ½ inch screws in line with the cabinet’s bottom markings on your wall. You should use the drill to install the screws.

Step 3 – Placing the Corner Medicine Cabinet

As soon as you have installed screws in the studs you can place the corner cabinet on the wall in such a way as to have it rest on the screws. Make sure to check the sides of the cabinet and ascertain that they are flat against the wall. If the cabinet seems to be moving or rocking you should use shims to secure it.

Step 4 – Securing the Cabinet

Once you have ascertained that the cabinet is safely placed you can now find the nailing strip inside the cabinet and drive more 2 ½ inch screws into the studs so as to properly fix the cabinet to the corner walls. Use at least two screws per stud. In this manner the corner medicine cabinet will be fixed to the wall through the screws nailed in the nailing strip and it will rest on the screws you have installed in Step 2.

This is the easiest, safest and most secure way to hand a corner medicine cabinet. Remember to enlist a helping hand if necessary, especially for Steps 3 and 4 so that someone can hold the cabinet in place while you work on it.
