How to Hang Louver Doors

Louver doors are exceptionally popular for use in closets. However, louvers doors are also great options for separating small living spaces of all kind. They are easy to install and can be painted to match any décor, not to mention you can find decorative louver doors as well. You can complete the installation of louver doors in a matter of hours.

Step 1—Take Accurate Measurements

Before you go out and buy your louvered doors, make sure you take accurate measurements. You will need to measure the width and length of the opening and you will also need to measure the width of the door jambs.

When you are taking measurements, make sure you consider any changes that you will be making to the opening. If you plan on taking up carpet, then you should take the measurements only after the carpet has been removed. This will give you the most accurate measurements.  The more accurate the measurements the better.

Step 2—Adjust the Door Height

Now that you have the door, you may need to make adjustments to the length of the door. Many homes that have new carpet installed, find that the door won’t open or close properly because of the carpet. You will want to have a plane on hand just in case you need to plane down the bottom of the door. 

If you do plan on having the area where the door will be installed carpeted, you may want to find a door without a bottom track. In some cases, the carpet can cause problems with the bottom track working properly. 

Step 3—Install the Track

Some louver doors come with a track included. If not, you will have to buy a separate track for your louver doors. These are available at your local home improvement store. You will need to make sure that you purchase a track that will fit your specific opening.

You will set the top track against the door jamb and mark the screw holes with a pencil. You will mark them with a pencil because you will need to drill pilot holes. The pilot holes will make screwing the track on easier, especially since you will have to hold it in place as you set the screws. 

If your door has a bottom track, you will install it now. To get the best placement for the bottom track, you should use a plumb bob. Mark the exact location of the bottom track and install it. 

Step 4—Place the Door on the Track

Most louver doors are spring loaded, so placing them on the track should be easy. If you have a bottom track, you will want to install the door there first. Simple, place the pivot point into the track and align the rest of the door. You will do the same in the top track.

Step5—Check the Door

Most tracks will come with some kind of sliding guide and/or pins that can be used to adjust the door. Put these accessories in place and check to make sure the door works properly. If not, you may have to tweak the height or the sliding guides.
