How to Hook up a PS3 to a Phillips Home Theater System

by DoItYourself Staff

Hooking up PlayStation 3 or PS3 to a Phillips Home Theater system may seem somewhat challenging, but it’s a lot easier than you think. One important and useful thing to keep in mind is that you will need to purchase some additional cables to make the system work right. Once connected, in addition to playing games, you can also enjoy watching movies and listening to music.

Locate the Appropriate Input

Check your home theater receiver for the input that you want to use. There may be a terminal for a game system itself, if not, then use the Video or Aux inputs.

Decide on the Connections

An HDMI audio connection carries all 7 channels and is used for a 7.1 set up while an optical connection requires a 5.1 set up. If you want standard definition, use composite video or S-Video, and for high definition, use HDMI for your video connection.

Buy Audio and Video Cables

Now that you have settled on the audio and video connections, you are ready to buy the necessary cables if they were not included in the package.

Make the Connections

Hook up the PS3 digital output to the digital audio input on the home theater receiver. Connect the HDMI cable, if using this, from the home theater receiver HDMI output to the TV HDMI input. For video only cables, connect the cable to the PS3 AV Multi output and TV input. Component cables are easy to install, since they have 3 separate color coded cables.
