How to Hook up an iPod to a Home Theater System

by DoItYourself Staff

From time to time, you will want to listen to music and audio from your iPod on your home theater system. Some iPods can be plugged into a home theater system via a docking station, but if you don't have one of these, you can hook up your iPod to your stereo with a few easy steps.

Using the iPod with a Home Theater System

Firstly, find an auxiliary cable that has a headphone connector and an RCA connector together. Turn your home theater system stereo over, and find a pair of jack inputs, which will be colored red and white. These must be there before you can use the iPod with this home theater system.

You will find that the auxiliary cable has a black headphone connection on one side, and a pair of red and white jack devices on the other side. Place the black headphone connection into the iPod's headphone socket. Then place the red jack into the red jack input on the back of the stereo, and then put the white jack into the white jack input.

Your home theater system stereo will need to be switched from CD or radio to AUX (for auxiliary). This will connect the speakers in the stereo to the iPod. Try playing a song: you should hear music.
