How to Improve TV Reception

by DoItYourself Staff

If you rely just on an antenna to receive good TV reception, you will be dealing with fuzzy pictures, interference and static.  Some or all of the following are simple and inexpensive ways to improve TV reception.

Step 1 - Check the Wires

If the wires are old, check them for loose fitting connectors. Weather, animals and other forces of nature can cause wires to fall off or corrode over time. Cut the connectors and replace them to improve your TV reception.

Step 2 - Change the Splitter

Buy a new high-quality splitter and replace the old splitter to improve your TV reception.

Step 3 - Relocate the Antenna

Move the antenna to a different location or turn the antenna to face a different direction. Add a motorized unit so you can turn the antenna without climbing ladders or walking on the roof.

Step 4 - Upgrade the Antenna

Consider purchasing an indoor antenna, which would position it closer to your TV transmitter and thereby improve your TV reception.

Step 5 - Switch to a DTV Receiver

These receivers receive digital broadcasts and will dramatically improve the quality of your TV reception (Note: television does not need to be a digital TV).

Just because you switch to a digital signal, does not necessarily mean better reception. Better digital TV reception can be achieved through signal amplification. To amplify your signal, upgrade your cable to a coax cable. RG 6 cable is better than RG 59, and solid copper is better than copper clad.
