How to Install a 3-Way Wireless Remote Light Switch

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Voltage tester
  • Yellow or red wire nuts, 3
  • Wire strippers
  • Screwdrivers: flat and Phillips
  • 3-way wireless remote light switch kit

A 3-way wireless remote light switch enables you to control lights from different spots in a house or facility. In conventional lighting systems you can only control a particular light by physically manipulating one dedicated switch. If a switch is located at the first floor and you are at the second floor, you would need to go down the stairs to turn off or on a light. With a 3-way wireless remote light switch, the distance constraint of traditional switches is eliminated as you can install switches in convenient and accessible locations. You can also easily install switches on just about any surface such as wood, cement or even plastic.

Step 1 - Advantages

An advantage of such a system is you don’t need to bore walls in a house or facility just to install additional wires.  It is also ideal for hard to reach spots and locations or areas undergoing remodeling. Installing a 3-way wireless remote light switch is simple and easy and does not require special skills or tools. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to successfully install a 3 way wireless remote light switch in your home or facility.

Step 2 - Connect the Wires

Determine where you would want to install the receiver. Ideally, they should be placed behind an existing switch. Turn off the power at the circuit breaker. Remove the existing light switch. Then test the wires using a voltage tester to make sure that the power has been completely shut off. Then count the wires. You will need to have 2 whites, 2 blacks and 2 grounds in order to install a receiver.

Connect the white terminals of the receiver to the white wires inside the box. Afterward, link this connection to the white receiver wires using a wire nut; connect the black wire of the receiver to the black wire inside the box. Proceed by connecting the red wire of the receiver to the black wire in the box that leads to the lighting.  You can now proceed to program the receiver.

Step 3 - Program the Receiver

Before you program the receiver, switch on the power first. Press the “learn” or “LRN” button on the receiver, then press the switch. Afterward, you will observe that the receiver’s light will stop flashing for a few seconds and then it will resume blinking.  While the receiver is blinking, press the second switch. You can continue doing this for all switches included in the kit. Once you’re done with all the switches, press the LRN button on the receiver. Reinstall the switch back to its original location. The 3-way wireless remote light switch is now ready for use.

A 3-way wireless remote light switch makes turning off and on a light convenient and easy. They are widely available in hardware and lighting stores and are very easy to maintain in general.
