How to Install a 5 Burner Range

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Rotating saw
  • Hammer and nails
  • Plywood for framing
  • Replacement countertop section (optional)
  • Correct gas outlet
  • New 220V electrical outlet for an all-electric
  • or dual fuel range
  • Larger range hood and vent

Most 5 burner range models are at least 30 inches in width across the top. The first thing you will need to do before purchasing a 5 burner range is to ensure you have enough room for it in your kitchen. If you have a 24-inch rangetop now, you will need to enlarge the space available for a 30-inch rangetop; you will also need to make alterations to fit a large 48-inch 5 burner range into space that held a 30-inch stove and cooktop. Follow the guidelines below to install your 5 burner range with as little disruption to your kitchen as possible.

Step 1: Measure and Create Sufficient Space for 5 Burner Range

Measure the space you will need for a 30-inch or 48-inch 5 burner range. Remove countertop and lower cupboard space as needed by cutting through with the rotating saw. Construct a new side wall for the lower cabinets, ensuring adequate access to the gas feed.

Step 2: Install Electrical Outlet for an All-Electric or Combined (Dual Fuel) Range

Arrange with an electrician to install a 220V electrical outlet for your range if it is all electric or has convection and electric ovens. A new separate fuse will be required for the circuit breaker box.

Step 3: Connect the Range to Gas / Electricity

Roll the range into the space, and plug it in as needed. Connect the gas feed to the main valve that will direct gas to each burner.

Step 4: Connect the Gas Burners

Connect each burner to its designated feed line. Attach the burners with the screws supplied to the rangetop base. Be careful to avoid scratching the rangetop, to keep it clean for healthier cooking.

Step 5: Install the Rangetop Cover

Set the rangetop cover over the rangetop. It may be a 1-piece unit, or each burner may have its own burner cover. Fit a 1-piece gridded metal cover into the side, rear and front slots and press it down firmly on all 4 corners. Set a glass rangetop cover gently on the rangetop and fit it into the slots that hold it in place. Place individual burner covers over the burners, and tap them into place. The correct fit of the rangetop cover no matter what style, keeps pots and pans level while cooking, preventing food spills and injuries from unbalanced cooking pots.

Step 6: Attach all Dials

Using the owner's manual, attach all the dials that control the burners and the ovens. Ensure they are facing the correct direction so they signal On and Off accurately.

Step 7: Test All Burners and Ovens

Test all the burners, 1 at a time, then 2 at a time to make sure they draw gas efficiently and that several burners will operate at once. Set the oven at various heats, including the broiler to check it for proper function. Test your new range's convection oven feature if you purchased such a model.
