How to Install a Computer Cooling Fan

Installing a computer cooling fan for your CPU is very important. This is not a very difficult task, however, it requires following a set of instructions. With the right tools you will be able to install a computer cooling fan.

Step 1 – Power off and Disconnect

Before you start working on the computer switch it off and unplug it from the mains. Remove the keyboard and disconnect all other accessories.

Step 2 – Check the CPU

You need to ascertain whether or not you have an empty vent to place the fan. Normally, the fans come with the appropriate vent.

Step 3 – Specifications

Fans can be placed either on the back or at the bottom of the case. If you are installing a fan on the back of the case you will need an 80 mm fan and for the bottom of the case a 120 mm fan.

Step 4 – Power Connectors

There are two options for connecting the fan; the motherboard or the power supply to the CPU. It is advisable to connect the fan to the power supply unit rather that the motherboard which is a bit difficult.

Step 5 – 4 Pin Adaptor

In order to connect the fan to the power supply unit in the computer you will need a 4 pin adapter.

Step 6 – Buying the Fan

The size of the vent is crucial while you go shopping for a fan. These fans generally come with an adapter. Make sure they are 4 pin, as you will be using that. Look for a fan with 12 volts and input of 1.8 watts.

Step 7 – Finding the Right Side

At first you might be difficult to differentiate between the front and back of the fan. The trick is to locate the logo of the company. This is the side that will be seen when placed into the computer. If this doesn't help then place the fan and check the air flow.

Step 8 – Mounting the Fan

Mount the computer cooling fan within the case and screw it up. Insert the screws from outside to prevent it from falling into the unit and cause damage.

Step 9 – Drive the Screws Carefully

The threads in the fan are made of very thin plastic and can get ripped easily. Handle it with care.

Step 10 – Connect the Fan

Connecting the wires is fairly simple, the black wire connects the corresponding black in the unit and red connects to the red. The four pin at the end of the adapter will connect to the power supply.

Step 11- Reconnect the Computer

After placing the fan in place and wiring it, connect the monitor, the keyboard, mouse and all other accessories that you had disconnected earlier.

Step 12 – Test the Fan

Turn on the power supply and power on your computer, the fan will start right away. Check the direction of the air. Finally if all is well slide the side panel on.
