How to Install a CPU Heatsink

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Silicone gel
  • Screwdriver
  • New CPU heatsink
  • Rubbing alcohol

A CPU heatsink is something that is found in every computer and laptop on the planet regardless of the brand, make or model you find. Every CPU in a computer generates heat when the computer is in operation. The CPU can generate over 70 watts of heat which depends on the type of the computer, the CPU heatsink and the processor as well as the settings of the computer. Over time the CPU heatsink will need to be replaced and the article below will show you how.

Step 1 – Accessing the Internals of the Computer

It is very important that you make sure the laptop is not only turned off but completely unplugged. Even though the system is off it can maintain a slight charge so after you unplug all the cables touch the metal frame of the case. This will ground you and remove any static electricity built up inside the computer. Use your screwdriver and locate the screws on the case of the computer. This can vary from computer to computer. Some computers will also use thumb screws that will need to be removed in order to take the case apart. Once the screws are removed simply pull the side of the case toward the back of the computer. It will slide away to show the internal components of the computer. Lay the computer on its side so you can maneuver inside the case better.

Step 2 – Remove the Old CPU Heatsink

Locate the processor of the computer. It will be easy to find because it is on the motherboard and is a large square. There will be a fan attached to the top of it and the chip itself rests inside a plastic base. On one side of the plastic base will be a lever. Press down on the CPU heatsink slightly with one hand while you unlatch the lever with your other hand. The CPU heatsink will lift up slightly and you will be able to pull it out of the motherboard. Unplug the fan and remove it from the chip followed by the heatsink.

Step 3 – Clean the Chip

You will notice silicone residue on the top of the chip where the heatsink was attached. Use a small amount of rubbing alcohol to remove this residue. Wipe down the fan as well to remove any dust that has collected on the blades.

Step 4 – Install the New CPU Heatsink

Use a small amount of the silicone and place a dot on the top of the processor. This will help create a surface for the heatsink as well as to aid in heat transference. Attach the new heatsink to the top of the processor and add some pressure for several seconds. Place the CPU heatsink back on the motherboard and place the fan on top. Push the lever down to secure it in place. Plug in the fan. Replace the side of the case and plug the power cable and other cables into the computer.
