These come in a number of different designs, including simple molding or more ornate designs. You can make your own mantel if you are skilled enough, or you can buy a prefabricated piece to install. Installing a fireplace mantel is very easy and it could save you quite a lot of money.
Step 1 - Choosing the Mantel
First, you will need to spend time choosing the right fireplace mantel for your home. This will all depend on your preferences. They are available in many different designs and different materials. Visit your local fire store or home hardware store to learn more about different types of mantels and choose the right one for your needs.
Step 2 - Positioning the Fireplace Mantel
Once you have your mantelpiece you should place it up against your fireplace on the bare brick. Put it where you intend to have it and take a look at what it looks like. Try and position it so that it is centered around the opening in the wall. You need to leave some clearance to prevent it from getting burnt or damaged.
When the fireplace mantel is in place you must use the spirit level to check that the mantelpiece is level. Use a spirit level to check the level of the front and height of the mantel.
Step 3 - Marking
Now, mark the position of the fireplace mantel on the wall using a pencil, you may have to go over the line several times using a pencil. This will make it much easier to fit the mantelpiece to the wall.
When the position of the fireplace has been marked on the wall, take the fireplace down from the wall and lie it down face down flat on the floor. Measure the dimensions of the measuring tape. Cut some lumber the same size as the mantelpiece using the circular saw.
Concentrate on the thickness of the fireplace mantel and make sure that it will fit snugly against the brick wall. Mark on the wall where you will insert cleats.
Step 4 - Drilling
Hold the cleats in place and use the hammer drill to drill holes through the cleat boards and into the brick. Now using the screwdriver brick screw the screws into the cleat boards and into the fireplace bricks.
Step 5 - Installing the Fireplace
Now it's time to install the fireplace on the wall. Make sure that you line the fireplace up against the lines on the wall and that everything is perfect. Use the screwdriver to screw the screws into your wall. Countersink the screws to hide them from view.
Step 6 - Finishing Touches
Use wood putty to fill in all of the holes left by the screws. This will make the finished fireplace look like it was installed by a professional.
