Installing a halogen spotlight can be a little bit tricky if you have never done it before, however it can be done by beginners. Here are a few tools that you will need, along with some simple steps that can help you through the process.
Step 1 - Prepare
Begin by making sure that you shut off the power to the area you are working on or to the entire house. Then, you can find the stud near the area that you want to install and wire the spotlight. You will need to measure where the studs are and mark them and also measure the distance between them. It is easiest to use a pencil to do this and just mark on the wall.
Step 2 - Cut an Opening
Before you do anything at all, make sure that you turn the power off the the area that you will be working on. Begin by cutting an opening. You will want to measure out the size of the light and mark the area that you want it to be. You may want to have an electric stud finder with you to make sure you can find the studs in the area.
Use a circular saw to carefully cut the hole out of the ceiling. When you are cutting, you might want to think about covering any opening near you if there is a sink or even just the counter tops as you don't want to have to unclog tham and it makes for a quicker clean up. One of the most important things to keep in mind is cutting carefully so that you do not hit any wires or cables that may be in the area above the ceiling. Now that you have cut open the ceiling, you may want to sand the edges a little to make sure they are even and not sharp.
Step 3 - Attach the Cables
Make sure that you sand the opening so that you don't hurt yourself and it looks great. Hook up a cable to the junction box and then use a cable clamp to tighten it up. Use wire connectors to connect them to the fixture that you are installing. Connect the fixture wires to the house wires and match up the colors appropriately.
Step 3 - Install the Spotlight and Bulb
Now you can put the spot light together once the cables have been installed. You can mount the spot light pretty much anywhere you want. And you should be able to just drill the bracket into the wall. Then piece together the spot light and screw the bulb in.
Once you have finished with the installation completely, turn the power back on and test out the spot light to make sure everything is working properly.
