How To Install A Hand Held Shower Head

by DoItYourself Staff

If you have a hand held shower head, you can easily direct the spray or water exactly where you want it. Read on to learn how to install this common alternative to a standard shower head.

Remove the Old Shower Head

Turn off the water at the mains. When you remove the old shower head, take care not to stress the water pipe coming from the wall.

Once the head is removed, thoroughly clean the threads on the pipe and remove any sealer that may have been used.

Attach the New Shower Head Holder

Wrap some Teflon tape around the screw threads on the water pipe. Take care to wrap the tape evenly, using no more than 2 layers.

Attach the holder for the new shower head. Tighten the screws by hand. Fix the shower hose to the holder and to the shower head. Then turn on the water and check for leaks.

With some handheld showers heads, the holder is fixed to the wall near the water pipe and the hose connected directly to the pipe. To fit these will require holes to be drilled in the splash back.
