How To Install A Home Security System
what you'll need
- Home security alarm system
- Two 6-volt batteries
- Current conducting silver foil
- Drilling machine
- Screws
A security system is a common trend in residential and commercial areas alike. This otherwise complex project also comes in the form of a kit that is relatively easy to install. Simple systems attach shut doors and windows in a wired loop that sets off an alarm when either one is opened, while the more complex ones are wireless and involve cameras.
Follow these steps to install an alarm system for your home.
Step 1: Install the Sounder
Attach the back plate accompanying the sounder to the wall with screws, and make sure it's secure before placing the sounder in it. The sounder sets off a loud alarm to scare away an intruder and warn homeowners of a possible break in. This can be placed both indoors and outdoors. If outdoors, place in a protective metal box to shield it from inclement weather.
Step 2: Attach Door Switches
Door switches should be installed at all points that pose a potential security hazard. Each switch includes a magnet and a switch. Attach the magnet to the door and the switch to the doorjamb. Try to make sure both parts are touching or attached close together, so that they begin to separate when the door is opened and set off the alarm.
Step 3: Mount Window Switches
Window switches should be attached to all windows that have a possibility of breaking into. These switches also contain a magnet that should be attached to the window, and a switch that goes on the window frame. Once again, attach them close together.
Step 4: Position Glass Breakers Correctly
Attach silver foil that can conduct a current to windows for additional security. These are self-adhesive and have connectors at the ends that you attach to the wiring. The foils have flexible cords that allow you to open windows without setting off the alarm.
Step 5: Wiring the System
The home security system has a thin two-wire cord that is almost inconspicuous when you run it down a door or along a wall. Start at a point farthest away from the sounder, such as the door or window switch. Loop both wires under a separate terminal screw, and route it neatly to the magnet, using staples to hold it in place. Do not cut or damage the wire. Take it to the next device and cut apart a bit of the copper colored wire before attaching it to the terminal screw.
Step 6: Connect the Wiring
Your security kit will include a red and black colored wire that should be connected to the positive and negative terminals of two 6-volt batteries, and then to the red and black wires of the sounder, respectively. Attach the wire between the two cells and turn the switch key on to operate the security system.
