How to Install a Ladder on a Bookshelf
what you'll need
- Bookshelf ladder kit
- Power drill
- Screwdriver
- Regular ladder
If you have a bookshelf in your home that is high and you want to reach the books on the upper level, you will need to install a ladder. A bookshelf ladder can be purchased in a kit that includes the ladder and rail attachment that allows you to move it from one end of the bookshelf to the other, along with the necessary hardware.
This article will discuss the tools, materials and steps needed to install a ladder to your bookshelf. This task should be easy to moderate for a do-it-yourselfer.
Step 1: Purchase Materials for Bookshelf Ladder
You will need to purchase the materials needed for the installation of the bookshelf ladder, including the ladder itself. You should look for these materials online or at a home improvement center that may retail bookshelf ladders as a kit or set. The set should include all of the materials needed for the assembly of the ladder and its attachment to the bookshelf.
Step 2: Set Up Work Space for Installation
You will need to clear away any furniture and other items that may be in the way of your installation of the bookshelf ladder. Move the items to one side of the room and away from the installation area.
Step 3: Set up the Ladder Rail
Part of the bookshelf ladder kit should consist of a rail attachment that is nothing more than a bar that is mounted to the bookshelf. This bar is what the ladder will be attached to with the required hardware to allow it to be moved into position in order to reach the upper level books and other items.
To attach this rail system, you will need to use a power drill and make holes where necessary in order to screw the rail bar into place. Use a drill bit that corresponds with the size of the screws that are being placed into the bookshelf for the rail. With the holes made, attach the rail bar and secure it with the screws using a screwdriver.
Step 4: Attach the Ladder
Attach the bookshelf ladder to the bar, making sure to attach any necessary hardware to the ladder in order for it to be connected. The ladder will also probably come with locking wheels that need to be placed at the bottom, in order to allow it to roll along the floor as it is being positioned.
With the ladder properly secured to the bookshelf, gently glide it across the floor and lock the wheels in position. Grip both sides of the ladder and give a tug to make sure that it is secured to the bookshelf and does not shake or wobble. You want to make sure that the bookshelf ladder is as secure as possible before climbing on it in order to avoid any injury or harm during use.
