How to Install a Laptop Processor

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • ESD strap
  • Precision screwdrivers

There could be several reasons for replacing a laptop processor. It might be running slow or you might just want to upgrade your laptop. Although it’s not an especially complex job, the construction of the laptop means that replacing a laptop processor means that this is a job only for people who are used to working on laptops.

Step 1 - Preparation

You should ideally have the manual for your laptop with you as a guide. Download from the manufacturer’s site if necessary. Also, before you work on your laptop, put an ESD strap on your wrist. This cuts out all the static and keeps the laptop safe. Shut down and close the laptop. Make sure all power sources, including the battery, are disconnected from the unit. Give the computer 30 minutes to completely cool down before working on it.

Step 2 - Disassembly

The manual will show you the right way to disassemble the laptop. It will vary from make to make and model to model. Make sure you follow the proper steps in the correct order. However it goes you’ll need to take apart the laptop, including removal of the keyboard, until you can properly access the laptop’s motherboard. Keep all the components safe. All the components of the laptop, including the laptop processor, are attached to the motherboard.

Step 3 - Processor Fan

Find the location of the processor fan on the motherboard. The fan assembly will be held on by screws or clips, or possibly a combination of both. Remove these and release the fan, making sure to disconnect the fan cable from the motherboard. The fan might be connected to the heat sink (this will depend on the make). Where this is the case it will be necessary to take out the heat sink. Remove the screws and lift it out. You will now be able to see the laptop processor, which is a microchip.

Step 4 - Removing the Processor

To take out the laptop processor you’ll need to turn the locking screw that holds it in place in a counter-clockwise direction. Doing this will release the processor from the socket where it’s held in place. Now take hold of the processor, being careful to hold it only by the edges. Lift it out very gently.

Step 5 - New Processor

To install the new laptop processor, make sure all the pins jutting out from the new processor chip are aligned with the holes in the socket. To secure it in place, take the locking screw and turn it in a clockwise direction. Don’t overtighten.

Step 6 - Assembly

With the new laptop processor in place you now have to reassemble the laptop. Begin with the cooling fan, with the heat sink if you’ve had to remove it. Reverse the steps you used to disassemble the laptop and make sure all ribbon cables are properly connected. Take your time and be careful to make sure all the parts fit in the correct place; there’s no spare room in a laptop casing.
