How to Install a Motion Security Light

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Exterior-rated lightbulb
  • Wire cutters
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • Ladder
  • Outdoor motion-sensor light
  • Cordless drill

The installation of a motion security light in a home is one good investment to a home. Aside from being a security device to the home, this simply adds glamour to the look of a home, especially after dark. Its auto-activation when necessary is energy-saving and a life-saving device. Homes built within the last 20 years may already have outdoor lighting fixtures installed, and all you have to do is attach a motion sensor to it. Below are the materials that you need along with the instructions on how to install a motion security light.

Step 1-Turn Off the Main Power Supply

For safety purposes, the electric power should be shut off before doing the installation. Determine the spot or location where the security light will be installed. A screwdriver and voltage tester is needed when climbing up the area using a ladder.

Step 2-Remove the Bulb

Take out the screws and bulbs from the light fixture. The circuit of the light fixture should be tested using the voltage tester. This is done by inserting the end of the voltage tester into the bulb's socket. The tip should touch the wires, and all wires should be tested

Step 3-Remove the Light Fixtures

Once assured that there is no power, the nut cap should be removed and the wires exposed. Remove the fixture from the wall by untwisting the wires. Cutting the wires may be necessary, and if so, have some insulation strips available so as to reattach the wires to the new lighting fixture.

Step 4-Examine the Motion Security Light

Examine the motion security light and read the installation manual that goes along with it. Test your motions security light to see if it is working before actually installing it.

Step 5-Drill the Fixture

Be ready with the light fixture and a cordless drill to bring up the ladder. Once up, attach the light into the light box and drill the screws securely. Connect the wires properly. Grounding wires should be connected to the light box. Wires should be twisted together. Screw a nut cap for the cover.

Step 8-Attach the Light Bulb

Put a new lightbulb into the unit. With the switch located below the unit, make adjustments on the light settings. It is best to keep it on ?otest mode to have the light on permanently.

Step 9-Do a Test

Turn the power on to test the light. If the unit is not working, do the steps for installation all over again but when it is working well, the motion-sensor switch should be reset. Attach then the face plate.

Step 10-Weatherproofing

It is best to seal the unit with weatherproof caulk, preferably silicone-based material. This should be done after making sure that the area is fully dry.

Step 11-Position the Light Sensor

Set the light sensor in the direction of the ground, aiming for a 45 degree angle. Check on the motion sensor after dark to make sure that the device detects necessary motions. It is appropriate to also check the sensor sensitivity and make adjustments on it.
