How to Install a Motion Sensor in a Wireless Remote Light Switch
what you'll need
- Wire strippers
- Screwdrivers
- Wire nuts
- Electrical tape
- Voltage tester
- Motion sensor
- Drill with 3/4 " hole saw
Having a motion sensor installed for your home is a great thing to increase the security of your home, and you can put one right in a wireless remote light switch. If you have experience in doing a lot of home projects you should not have any problems with installing one yourself.
Step 1 - Turn Off the Breaker
The first thing you should do before anything else is to turn off the breaker. If it is a fixture or switch, you will need to remove them. Make sure to disconnect the grounding wire.
Step 2 - Mark and Cut the Sensor's New Location
Look where you might be able to place the sensor and when you find a good spot within the switch area in the wall, make a mark for the placement of the sensor. You are going to have to do some drilling and so you will have to move the existing wires out of the way. Use the drill and hole saw to drill the holes you will need to connect the sensor to.
Step 3 - Secure the Sensor
Place the rubber weather proof grommet over the wires and shaft of the sensor. Take the motion sensor and put the wires through the access hole until the shaft goes through the hole. Secure the sensor with the lock nut that comes with the sensor itself.
Step 4 - Connect the Wires
There are three wires that will be coming from the sensor one is black, one is white and the third one is red. Strip some insulation off of the wires if you need to so you can connect the wires to the light switch wires. Wire together white to white, black to black and red to red wires. You will need to secure all of these wires with a wire nut. Then wrap with electrical tape.
Step 5 - Test the System
Secure the switch panel to the wall again. Turn on the breaker to test whether or not everything works.
