How to Install a PCI Wireless Adapter
what you'll need
- Wireless router
- PCI wireless adapter
- Screwdriver
Installing a PCI wireless adapter means you can locate your desktop computer anywhere you want in the house and it will connect wirelessly to your home network. This gives you real freedom and results in fewer cables in the house, which in this age of electronic equipment that can only be a good thing.
Step 1 - Router
If you already have a wireless network set up in your home you’ll need to know the make and model of your router. If you’re setting up a wireless network follow all the instructions that come with the router and configure the network. Check that it’s working by using another computer, such as a laptop.
Step 2 - Software
Once the wireless network is properly configured, you can install the software for the PCI wireless adapter. There will be a CD with the PCI wireless adapter. Put it in the computer and run it. Follow the instructions to install the software and then shut down the computer. Disconnect the power cord from the computer.
Step 3 - Inside the Computer
Use the screwdriver to remove the screws from the side cover of the computer and take it off. This will give you access to the computer’s interior. Open the instructions for the PCI wireless adapter. These will help you locate the PCI slot on your computer. You’ll see that there is an access plate behind it, on the back of the computer. Remove this. It is where the antennae for the PCI wireless adapter will go.
Step 4 - Installing the PCI Wireless Adapter
When you find the empty PCI slot and you’ve removed the metal piece, slide the PCI wireless adapter into the slot. Do this very carefully so you don’t touch any of the circuits. Don’t push too hard, but enough to ensure it’s fitted properly in the slot. Screw on the antenna and make sure that it’s pointing upward.
Step 5 - Testing
Put the side panel back in the computer and screw it into place. Plug the computer back in and start it up. Since you’ve already installed the software and the drivers for the adapter, it should start up without any problem. If it doesn’t, shut down the computer, unplug and open it to check that the PCI wireless adapter is seated properly.
Step 6 - Connect to Network
Once the PCI wireless adapter is working you’ll be asked what network you want to connect to, and given a choice of those that the computer can see. You should know which one is yours.
Your wireless network needs to be secure to prevent someone else piggybacking onto it and possibly even hacking into your computers. To give you security you should have created a password for the network. When you select the network you’ll need to enter it. Once the password has been accepted you’ll be online with the PCI wireless adapter. You’ll find that you won’t need to enter the password each time you try to go online. The connection will be constant each time you boot up your computer.
