How to Install a Receptacle Adapter

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • A 3 to 2 prong receptacle adapter
  • Screwdriver

If you have a device that has a 3 prong plug, but your outlet only accepts 2 prong plug-ins, you will need a receptacle adapter. The third prong on an outlet is for the ground and is very important if you want to protect your equipment. Surges or spikes are usually redirected to the ground with these types of cords and you should never break off the third prong to make it fit. Follow this guide to learn how to install an adapter.

Step 1 - Buy Adapter

Visit your local home improvement store and purchase a 3 prong to 2 prong receptacle adapter. Always purchase the type that has a small copper tab at the top of the adapter with a hole in it. Never purchase one without this tab as it is completely useless for protecting your equipment. The tab on the correct type of adapter is connected to the screw in your outlet cover plate and acts as a ground in place of the third prong.

Step 2 - Unscrew Cover Plate Screw

Take the screwdriver and unscrew the screw on the cover plate. Don't remove the cover plate.

Step 3 - Install Adapter

Plug in the 3 prong to 1 prong receptacle adapter in the outlet as you normally would. The tab on the adapter should line up directly over the screw hole on the cover plate. Use the screwdriver to reinsert the screw. Now plug your 3 prong cord plug in to the adapter.
