How to Install a Remote Control Thermostat Part 2

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Computer or iPod, or iPhone
  • Remote control unit
  • Coupling cable
  • Add a wire accessory kit

There are many types of remote control thermostat units out there, and each has its own special way of connecting to either your computer, a remote control unit or even your ipod. You will want to consult your owners manual for instructions on how to properly connect your specific unit to ensure that it will function properly once it is installed. There is any number of different types of these units that run off of software on your computer or through a web page access panel, that can allow you to make environmental changes anywhere in your home or office.

Step 1 - Install the Add a Wire Accessory Kit

If the wires coming from your heating or cooling unit to the remote control thermostat does not have a common wire running from it to provide electrical current to the unit, you will have to install one to provide power. This is an adapter kit that needs to be wired into your furnace or cooling unit and through the walls to the opening where the thermostat is being installed to provide proper electrical current to it.

Step 2 - Set your Environmental Settings

Follow the instructions in your owner's manual to set your environmental preferences for your home and lock them in using the remote thermostat control. Once this has been done, you are ready to sync the controller to a remote feed, either through your computer, iPhone or iPod. Some models allow you Internet or remote access to your home's environmental controls right from your home or office. As an example, if you are at work and notice it is raining (which naturally drops humidity levels in the atmosphere), you can simply access your control panel at your desk in the office to turn your air conditioning off at home.

Step 3 - Set up your Remote Connection

Now that you have all of the preferred settings for your thermostat in place, you can now sync your remote control thermostat to a remote device. This also varies by the make and model of the unit you have installed, and more detail on the proper method of activating this feature should be explained in your owners manual. It will depend greatly on what make and model you get and install as to what kind of remote access you can have to the unit, so you want to ensure you get the type which will best suit your needs.

Step 4 - Wired or Wireless Units

There are wired and wireless remote control thermostat units available, and the owner's manual will give details of how to set this up properly, as they vary depending on the make and model. In any case, this generally involves the installation of software on either your phone, ipod or home computer, which is actually the virtual control system, or brains behind the device's functionality. If you have problems with your home computer, such as viruses and the like, this can effect your environmental control program on the computer as well.
