How to Install a Remote Dimmer Switch

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Dimmer switch
  • Remote (Dimmer switch)
  • A Screwdriver (preferably a tester)
  • Wire nuts (normally three are enough)
  • A small cutter
  • A small torch
  • A Volt meter

A remote dimmer switch is very useful and gives a modern look to the room. A remote dimmer switch eliminates the physical touching of the dimmer switch which tends to get quite dirty over time. This type of dimmer switch can be used anywhere in the house. It is ideal for a bedroom since you won’t need to get out of bed to switch off the light. When it comes to installation, a remote-control dimmer switch is exactly like a normal dimmer switch; hence it’s not that difficult to do. This article will show you how to install a remote dimmer switch.

Step 1: Switching Off the Electricity

The first thing to when dealing with any electrical work is to switch off the main power supply. Do not work on any electrical part of your house without having first switched off the electrical supply. Many accidents happen because of this step hence don’t be careless. In order to be certain that the power is turned off, use a volt meter to check for any live current.

Step 2: Remove the Old Switch

Use the screwdriver to unscrew the old switch. Once the old screws are loose take off the switch cover plate. Don’t use excessive force on it because although it is loose it still has wires attached to it.

Step 3: Disconnecting the Wires

At this point if you can’t see properly inside the switch box use a small torch. It is important to know what you are doing and which wire goes where. If you can’t manage alone, ask somebody to help you. Now loosen the small screws or nuts attached to the old switch cover so that the attached wires can be freed. Once you are done pull out the old switch cover gently and put it aside. If there is the need, trim the wires using a cutter so that they can be installed with more efficiency.

Step 4: Installing the Remote Dimmer Switch

Normally dimmer switches come with leads instead of screws hence you will need three wire nuts. Always consult the manufacturer’s diagram to see how the wires are labeled. There should be a wire that is used for the neutral connection. Connect each wire to its corresponding wire into the wall using a wire nut.

Step 5: Testing the New Dimmer Switch

Now screw the remote dimmer switch into the wall using the old screws (or new ones if the old ones are badly ridden). Put on the cover plate and turn on the electrical supply. Turn on the lights using the remote control. Make sure that you point the remote control in the direction of the switch. If it doesn’t work properly, re-install the switch using the same procedure.

As you have seen it’s not that difficult to install a remote dimmer switch. Once ready, all you have to do is to settle down and relax with your family or friends and create your ideal atmosphere by means of your newly installed dimmer switch.
