what you'll need
- Adjustable wrench
- Mineral spirit
- Hand shower kit

- Plumbers strap
A shower arm mount would allow you to hold the shower arm securely in place. However, there is a certain amount of clearance that is needed in order to have a shower at just the right level. The height of the arm mount would depend on the model of shower arm that you chose. Never pick a shower arm with its appearance as your only basis before you know the height that you will need for your shower arm mount. It is a common mistake among people to choose a shower arm and head that looks great to them only to end up with a shower that reaches only up to the chest. In installing a shower mount and the shower itself, you need to purchase several things that you will need.
Step 1 – Taking Out the Installed Showerhead
In removing the showerhead that is already installed in your shower, you can use an adjustable wrench. To clean the threads completely, you may use mineral spirits and a rag. This will also completely remove every trace of the thread compound or plumber’s tape that has been used in the installation of the shower stem.
Step 2 – Preparing the Shower Stem
If the hand shower kit that you purchased comes with a rubber boot for decoration, slide it on the shower stem. You can then get your plumber’s tape and wrap a couple of layers of it on the shower stem threads.
Step 3 – Installing the Shower Arm Mount
The shower arm mount should be installed on the shower stem by screwing it until it is secure. Tighten the installation with an adjustable wrench but take care not to over tighten as you could damage the fixture. Twist on the shower arm mount so that the hose threads are on a position that is facing towards the bathroom floor.
Step 4 – Installing the Shower Hose
Get the washer that comes with the hand shower kit and position it over the shower hose tip. Connect the shower hose with the shower arm mount by screwing it on and tightening by hand. Be sure that you screw on the threads correctly so as not to cross them. You can then slide the rubber boot on the shower arm mount. This boot is necessary for decorative purposes.
Step 5 – Connecting the Shower Hose with the Showerhead
Before you try attaching the shower hose to the showerhead, make sure that the washer that is inside the hose is in its proper location.
Once it is in its proper position, screw the shower head on the shower hose and tighten the connection by hand. Again, make sure that you do not cross the threads as you tighten the connection. Once it is done, you can then put the showerhead on the shower arm mount. Turn on the water supply slowly to test your installation. If it is functioning properly, your hand shower is ready to be used.
